Abstract At the moment Diesel powered engines are still and by far the most commonly used setups for heavy duty applications. Compared to this 5 alternative approaches have been shown. Every combustion mode has its own advantages and disadvantages. Some of those shall be pointed out in comparison to Diesel, but are also compared among each other. All applications which use a gaseous fuel have the disadvantage of the lower energy content in relation to the tank volume. This especially applies to Hydrogen. But the shown Hydrogen/Diesel Dual Fuel approach might be an alternative e.g. for urban use (busses, garbage collection …). The low emissions in the raw exhaust gas allow the use of a rather simple nitrogen oxide exhaust gas aftertreatment system for EURO VI.
