This paper provides insights, through a case study, into the financial implications of using different noise and vibration mitigation measures in urban railway applications.

Noise complaints had been received at the S metro line 3 of S city in China. A comprehensive noise and vibration assessment was therefore conducted. Excessive levels of in-car noise and vibration, as well as rail corrugation were identified at 15 out of 44 track sections of the S metro line 3.

Three options of noise and vibration mitigation measures were proposed, with both technical feasibility and practicality properly examined. Long-term financial implications due to the selection of mitigation measures were evaluated using Life-cycle cost analysis. Cost profile and cost intensive year(s) throughout the life-cycle are valuable information, enabling a straight-forward and meaningful cost comparison between different mitigation options. The outputs of life-cycle cost analysis are of interests to asset owners and decision makers.

Furthermore, life-cycle cost analysis is useful at the design stage for new railway lines, as it facilitates early anticipation of the investment plan and overall expenditure.
