The defunct satellites pose serious security risks to other on-orbit spacecraft in GEO, while the existing ground-based surveillance system cannot provide state observation for all GEO satellites. This paper proposes a novel space-based observation approach for multiple defunct satellites in difference phase of the GEO orbits. First, considered the multiple constraints including the observation distance, the observation window, the observation period and the fuel consumption, the flyby trajectory from the service satellites’ high elliptic orbit to multiple GEO defunct satellites is developed. Then, a novel pose parameters determination approach based on formation observation is proposed for these defunct satellites. The dynamic model of multi-satellite formation observation is constructed; based on the collaborative observation data, the pose parameters of the defunct satellite in GEO can be obtained via three-dimensional reconstruction, point cloud matching and EKF filtering. Numerical simulations results demonstrate the feasible of the proposed method.
