A brief history surrounding the first powered flight of an airplane is provided, as a means for introducing the topic of aerospace propulsion. Example successes, and failures, give the reader a sense of the challenges that one encounters in this field. The modern design and certification process is described. Issues surrounding the integration of a given propulsion system to a flight vehicle are also discussed. Finally, in preparation for coverage of material in the chapters to follow, a review is undertaken of the thermodynamics and gasdynamics of internal flows.
