This paper investigates the influences of time-of-day on crash risks of highways under mixed traffic situations using field data. The idea behind selecting study sites was identifying a highway section in a way such that one part of it is two-lane and the remaining part is of multi-lane status. The analytical framework of the research considers both, historical crash data and also, traffic data of the sections at four time segments: morning, midday, evening and night-time. Field studies by way of videotaping road traffic ensured a reasonable amount of accuracy in data pertaining to speed and time gap. Reliability-based assessment elucidates that on the multi-lane section, the predominant crash type is ‘rear-end’ whereas it is ‘head-on’ on two-lane sections. On multi-lane sections, frequencies of such incident are observed to increase during night-time due to drivers’ inability to assess gap; this is attributable to glare effects of headlights and also, high speed of traffic. Reliability of ‘head-on’ type of incidents on two-lane sections is found to be quite low, about 0.19–0.31, irrespective of time-of-day. However, the conservative attitude that part of drivers exhibits during night-time due to the matter of visibility reduces frequencies of such incidents.
