A background of collision avoidance and safe trajectory planning for ships has been drawn in this chapter. Among the discussed issues are: the history of collision avoidance, the development of path planning methods, navigational aids and regulations introduced in order to enhance the maritime safety. The main applications of trajectory planning algorithms have been described briefly, starting from the trial maneuver function of the Automatic Radar Plotting Aid, through Decision Support Systems, up to Autonomous Navigation Systems of Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships.
