Growth of the human population and global economic activity are placing significant strain on the life-carrying capacity of the Earth. Demands for food, clean water, shelter and energy are increasing as is the pollution generated through the consumption of these resources. The increase in demand for these resources is driven not only by population growth, but also from the desire to improve one’s standard of living. In general, an improved standard of living requires an increase in the energy used per person. These two factors together lead to compounded growth in the demand for limited resources and in the production of hazardous pollutants.
