The advent of the nuclear powered submarine alters the ASW problem and sets new requirements for advanced performance of ASW vehicles. The performance of surface ships, submarines, hydrofoils, and ground effect machines is shown to be determined largely by the specific weight of the power plant. Routes to low specific powerplant weight are discussed, currently available light weight marine powerplants are shown, and the prospects for the future are touched upon, It is shown that engines are available which permit the design of ships of greatly increased speed. It is recommended that such ships be evaluated for ASW use.
