The selection of the proper compaction tool for highway, airport, dam, and foundation construction is just as important as the kind of soil being worked. An economical operation can be effected only when the type of machine is able to spread and compact at a high speed with the fewest number of compaction tools. This paper compares the capabilities of the various types of equipment in the preparation of soil to support structures or wheel loads.
