THIS paper deals with importance of fuels in connection with the future development of engines for higher power and greater efficiency.Described here are investigations made on the effect of molecular structure on fuel knocking characteristics. These studies have lead to the discovery and manufacture of tank car quantities of an outstanding paraffin hydrocarbon known as triptane. This fuel is capable of increasing enormously the permissible output of engines with a high degree of supercharge and is also capable of permitting the attainment of higher efficiencies through the use of higher compression ratios. The commercial development of such fuels opens up new possibilities for the gasoline engine in the future.
