In order to improve turbocharger turbine efficiency at nigh specific speed, a prototype mixed-flow turbine was designed, fabricated and tested at the Garrett Automotive Group of Allied-Signal. The steady-flow performance of the mixed-flow turbine was obtained from combustion gas stands with divided and undivided noz-zleless volute turbine housings. The mixed-flow turbine with a divided turbine housing was also tested on a diesel engine. Significant turbine and engine performance improvements were observed with the mixed-flow turbine.
