Most striking is that it is being fueled almost exclusively by the market expectations of the private sector rather than the public funding opportunities. Government policy has been behind because this revolution is premised on using the road infrastructure as-is and uses components that adhere to More's Law, whose performance is governed by the quality of its algorithms and code rather than its physical properties. The transportation technology revolution is reminiscent of the emergence of the Internet with an even smaller infrastructure burden. The Internet revolution was also fueled almost entirely out of the private sector but assisted with some significant initial inspiration from the Department of Defense and National Science Foundation. This section presents only hypotheticals, all aimed at making NHTSA more nimble and flexible. However, what should also be considered is the creation of an entirely new entity. NHTSA has a very important mission associated with accommodating human drivers, crash worthiness, and the hardware side of cars.
