The design of variable permanent magnets for use in magnetic balancing and control of earth orbiting spacecraft is discussed. These magnets can be used instead of air coils or electromagnets in applications where the objective is to produce, or eliminate, torque on the spacecraft through interaction with the earth's magnetic field. The configuration of the magnet for minimum size and weight is described. (Author)
