This paper describes some features of the environment surrounding missile-type vehicles in hypersonic flight. Emphasis is placed on the physical basis for the phenomena observed or thought to exist. Some remarks on the problem of attenuation of communication signals to and from high speed vehicles by ionization induced near the surface is included.
