The purpose of this study was to determine whether preschool children trained in swimming/water safety are less likely to drown than those who have not been trained. Two- and three-year-old children were randomized to receive either 8 or 12 weeks of swimming/water safety training. The children's water safety skills were assessed before, immediately after, and 12 weeks following the training program. These measurements assessed the child's risk of falling into a pool and their ability to recover and get to safety after falling into the pool.
