Studies were performed to develop low-cost techniques for training infantrymen to engage low-flying aircraft with small arms. The first approach included training on estimating distance, leading, and tracking, using a special training device. After training, in live firing using a sleeve target towed at low altitudes, 16 riflemen obtained 10 hits for 960 rounds fired. In the second approach, a miniaturized program used air rifles against 1/10-scale aircraft silhouettes. This training was also evaluated by a live-firing test. (Author)
