A metallurgical evaluation was conducted to determine if selected castings of 17-4 PH stainless steel used in head caps on missile weapon systems had been properly heat treated as required by SAE specification AMS-5355D. Optical metallographic analysis and hardness measurements were made on four samples of as-received castings and on selected samples that were homogenized, solution annealed and aged at various temperatures.
