The development of sodium-sulfur batteries for peak power generation and off-peak energy storage are discussed as is its application to electric vehicles. Emphasis is placed on development of battery components to ensure long service life. Particular attention is focused on the use of solid electrolytes and improvement of physical and electrical and transport properties of this critical component. Vehicle applications include trucks, railroad transportation and the problems of refueling. Both low and high temperature versions of the battery are reviewed in terms of electrolytes and separators.
