Criteria necessary for a condition of attitude stability for passive or semi-active satellites are defined. A general method incorporating these criteria is applied to satellites containing elastic structures or mobile parts and a gravity gradient stabilized on multispin satellites. The numerical application of the method is discussed, and energy dissipation effects due both to the flexibility of the structure and to nutation damping devices are included. (Author)
