Limited systems tests were conducted during a 34.8-flight hour evaluation of the UH-1N helicopter. These tests were conducted at Howard AFB, Canal Zone, to determine the adequacy of the UH-1N systems and components during operation after extended exposure to the tropical environment. Protection against the environment was adequate except for several instances of minor surface corrosion and numerous water leaks. Propulsion system operation was satisfactory. Static and background noise existed on all transmissions to the aircraft. Operation of the VHF-FM radio was acceptable at close ranges. Navigation systems were acceptable, but in some cases VOR system accuracy was questionable. The AN/APX-72 transponder should be installed in all UH-1N helicopters. Operation of the helicopter and UH-1 hoist in a confined jungle area was satisfactory, but foreign object accumulations in the engine inlet plenums after hover indicated that the particle separators were not completely effective.
