The number of traffic fatalities has decreased over the last fifteen years rather systematically and not only in the Netherlands. It is to be expected and hoped that improvements in medical technology have contributed to this decrease. Results from a literature review show that: in spite of the decreasing number of traffic deaths, the number of deaths at the spot of the accidents is increasing a little. The degree of severity of traffic injuries is relatively more, but the number of injuries per accident is less; and improvements in first aid and trauma care, diagnostic as well as therapeutic, have contributed essentially to the decrease in traffic fatalities.
