The study identifies and evaluates the relative safety of the various types of lane drop situations presently found on California highways. Eight different lane drop situations were categorized and 167 different sites fitting these descriptions were located. Using the 1965 and 1966 accident records, accident rates were calculated for the upstream, transition, and downstream portions of road at each lane drop. These rates were compared for significant differences using the chi-square test. Comparisons relative to mainline alignment, ramp location, and pavement type in the lane drop area are also included in the study. (Author)
