The report is a review of the literature on the effectiveness of certain crash protection (safety) devices introduced into automobiles in 1960's. Included are reviews on lap belts, shoulder belts, energy absorbing steering columns, high penetration resistant windshields, head restraints, and side door beams. Only those articles which evaluated safety devices by sampling real-world accidents were reviewed in this report. Articles which evaluated safety devices in controlled crash situations were not reviewed. Similarly, articles which were based on clinical evaluations of unique accidents were not considered.
