The primary purpose for the research project was to investigate crashes between heavy motor vehicles (trucks) and smaller or lighter motor vehicles (passenger cars) to establish a criteria or standard for equipping such heavy vehicles with rear and side optimum energy absorbing underride guards which would result in a reduction in the number of fatalities and severe injuries to the occupants of the smaller cars.
