Experiments were conducted in the Allegheny Mountain Tunnel of the Pennsylvania Turnpike in the summer of 1979 to evaluate the Ames-assay bacterial mutagenicity of the solvent extracts of particulate emissions from heavy-duty Diesels and gasoline-powered vehicles in highway operation.
