In 1962, a sample of negligent drivers eligible for Driver Improvement Meetings (DIM's) was selected for study. The total sample was randomly split into (1) meeting group subjects, who were sent DIM notices, and (2) controls who were not notified. Later, the records of 1,440 meeting group subjects and 610 controls were examined to determine if any difference in the average number of accidents or countable convictions during the subsequent year could be detected.
