A series of tests has been performed in order to estimate the likelihood of a violent, destructive event occurring when the NASA Space Shuttle Solid Rocket Booster (SRB) abort system is deployed. The system utilizes a linear shaped charge to cut open the rocket casing. A series of minimum requirements or criteria have been established that are necessary for a detonation to be initiated. All the laboratory tests described here have been designed to obtain fundamental sensitivity data for the SRB propellant. These data are independent of the size of the propellant grain. This represents a new approach to the analysis of the possible hazards associated with the accidental ignition of solid rocket propellants.
