A qualitative flight test evaluation was conducted on the Harrier GR Mk 1 VSTOL aircraft, S/N XV-743, at Dunsfold, England, from 16 January 1969 to 27 January 1969. The aircraft was an early production model aircraft and had not been fitted with the following standard equipment: navigation/attack system, head-up display, engine pressure and temperature limiters, Martin-Baker Mk 9 ejection seat and production wheel brakes. Each of the two evaluation pilots received a normal checkout program and an evaluation flight for a combined total of twenty-one flights and 8.5 flying hours. The aircraft was very easy to fly during vertical and partially jetborne flight, and appeared very capable of being an effective ground attack fighter. The Harrier incorporated many unique features designed to permit operations from unprepared sites with a minimum of support equipment. (Author)
