We demonstrate the femtosecond Faraday effect in Cd/sub 0.88/Mn/sub 0.12/Te single crystals and its implementation in room-temperature magneto-optical sampling. Our technique is highly sensitive and capable of measuring sub-picosecond magnetic transients generated by a free-standing LT-GaAs photoswitch.
