In this paper we review the current status of the standardization process for the Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) Service Announcement (SA) mechanism. We depict the main differences between ETSI, ISO and IEEE standards, what the shortcomings are and how they could be overcome. The service-oriented architecture established in the ongoing research project COmmunication Network VEhicle Road Global Extension (CONVERGE) pinpoints the need of a new concept for the publication, announcement, discovery and provision of a service. For that purpose, two enhancements compatible with ETSI SA standard are proposed, will be integrated and assessed in a fully functional system architecture, the C2X Systems Network architecture.
