This paper develops a set of formulas for computing the throughput of traffic in a network when an alternative route to alleviate the congestion for the primary route is available. Decision on route choice can be made by the driver (i.e. routing strategy) based on calculations with these formulas. Furthermore, automated route suggestion devices can also use this production. Models for both non-congested and congested networks are developed.
