The present invention provides a vehicle speed detection method which facilitates vehicle speed measurement and equipment operation and installation. According to an embodiment of the present invention, the vehicle speed detection method comprises: a step of receiving a first vehicle image photographed by a camera at a first time (t1); a step of identifying an area occupied by a license plate from the first vehicle image, and extracting a first license plate number; a step of receiving a second vehicle image photographed by the camera at a second time (t2); a step of identifying an area occupied by a license plate from the second vehicle image, and extracting a second license plate number; a step of comparing the first license plate number and the second license plate number to determine whether the first license plate number and the second license plate number are equal; a step of analyzing a license plate number position distribution in the license plate from at least one image of the first vehicle image and the second vehicle image to identify a license plate size if the first license plate number and the second license plate number are equal, and determining a real size (H) of the license plate number from the identified license plate size; a step of using a focal distance (f) of the camera, a pixel size (s) (of a camera image sensor), and a size (h) of a license plate in a photographing vehicle image to calculate distances (D) between the vehicle and the camera at the first time and the second time; and a step of using the distances between the vehicle and the camera at the first time and the second time and a time difference between the first time and the second time to calculate a vehicle speed (v).

본 발명의 일실시예에 따른 차량 속도 검출 방법은, 제 1 시점(t1)에서 카메라로 촬영된 제 1 차량 영상을 입력받는 단계; 상기 제 1 차량 영상으로부터 번호판이 차지하는 영역을 식별하고 제 1 차량번호를 추출하는 단계; 제 2 시점(t2)에서 카메라로 촬영된 제 2 차량 영상을 입력받는 단계; 상기 제 2 차량 영상으로부터 번호판이 차지하는 영역을 식별하고 제 2 차량번호를 추출하는 단계; 제 1 차량번호와 제 2 차량번호를 비교하여 제 1 차량번호와 제 2 차량번호가 동일한지 여부를 판단하는 단계; 제 1 차량번호와 제 2 차량번호가 동일한 경우, 제 1 차량 영상 또는 제 2 차량 영상 중 어느 하나 이상의 영상으로부터 번호판 내의 차량번호 위치 분포를 분석하여 번호판 규격을 식별하고, 식별된 번호판 규격으로부터 차량번호의 실제 크기(H)를 확정하는 단계; 카메라의 초점거리(f), (카메라 이미지 센서의) 화소크기(s), 촬영된 차량 영상에서 차량번호의 크기(h)를 이용하여, 제 1 시점 및 제 2 시점에서의 차량과 카메라 사이의 거리(D)를 계산하는 단계; 및 제 1 시점 및 제 2 시점에서의 차량과 카메라 사이의 거리, 제 1 시점 및 제 2 시점 사이의 시간차를 이용하여 차량 속도(v)를 계산하는 단계;를 포함한다.
