PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an obstacle detecting device and method that permit detection of long-distance obstacles without error even if any highly reflective and diffusing obstacle (e.g. a white line) is drawn on the road surface at a long distance (e.g. 30 m or more) from a traveling vehicle.SOLUTION: A short-distance laser unit 12 irradiates a short-distance range A1 close to a traveling vehicle 1 with a first laser beam, and detects an obstacle position 5a and a road surface position 6 from the time difference between that incident light and reflected light (A). A long-distance laser unit 14 irradiates an overlapping range B and a long-distance range A2 with a second laser beam, and detects an obstacle position 5b from the time difference between that incident light and reflected light (B). A data processor, utilizing the detection result regarding the overlapping range B, identifies the road surface position 6 detected by the short-distance laser unit 12 and the long-distance laser unit 14 and an obstacle position 5c erroneously detected from the obstacle positions 5a and 5b, and deletes them (C to E).SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 6
