The electrical power system has fault current protection provided by current limiting diodes or CLDs, (figs 5A, 5B). The electrical power system 600 comprises an electrical machine 601 within a gas turbine engine (fig 1), an AC:DC converter 602 connected to receive an input AC supply from the electrical machine 601 and provide an output DC supply across first and second output terminals 603a, 603b to a DC bus 604. A load 605 is connected across the DC bus. A first circuit breaker switch S1 and a first current limiting diode CLD1 are connected in series between the AC:DC converter 602 and the DC bus 604. A second circuit breaker switch S2 and a second current limiting diode CLD2 are connected in series between the DC bus 604 and the load 605. The first current limiting diode CLD1 is configured to limit current to a higher level than the second current limiting diode CLD2. This arrangement is said to improve fault discrimination.
