A braking system for a trailer has a brake actuator 10 which is movable from a first brake engaged position to a second brake disengaged position. The brake is biased towards the first position by a first biasing mechanism 20 and is movable to a second position by a second biasing mechanism 22, the second biasing mechanism being sufficient to overcome the first biasing mechanism when being applied. The first biasing mechanism may constantly urge the brake into the first position, and may be a coil spring or one or more disk springs. The second biasing mechanism may be a hydraulic piston arrangement. There may be a third biasing mechanism 82. The first biasing mechanism may be located within a first chamber between a rear wall 14 of an outer body and the second biasing mechanism. The second biasing mechanism may have a piston and a connecting rod, the connecting rod passing through a bore in a front wall of an outer body. It may define a secondary chamber 90 into which hydraulic fluid is introduced by an inlet port 92. Also disclosed is a trailer with the abovementioned braking system or actuator.
