A method of controlling an electric marine propulsion system (2) configured to propel a marine vessel (1) includes receiving a user-set distance, identifying a battery charge level (81) of a power storage system (16) on a marine vessel (1) and identifying an energy utilization value (82). An output limit (94) is then determined based on a remaining distance (90), the battery charge level (81), and the energy utilization value (82). The propulsion system (2) is then automatically controlled so as to not exceed the output limit (94), enabling the marine vessel (1) to travel the user-set distance without recharging the power storage system (16).
