The invention relates to a drive system for supported driving of a watercraft (1) that can be moved by muscle power. The drive system has a drive unit (2) designed to drive a watercraft, which drive unit can be fastened to the watercraft (1), and an energy source (8) for providing energy to the drive unit (2). A sensor unit (14), which has at least one acceleration detection device (16) for detecting an acceleration of a means of propulsion (9) that can be moved by muscle power and/or at least one pressure detection device (15) for detecting a pressure on the means of propulsion (9) that can be moved by muscle power, and a control unit (10) for controlling a drive power of the drive unit (2) are also part of the drive system, wherein the control unit (10) is configured to receive signals from the sensor unit (14) and the drive power of the drive unit (2) can be controlled in dependence upon the detected acceleration of the means of propulsion (9) and/or the detected pressure on the means of propulsion (9). The invention further relates to a method for controlling a drive system for supported driving of a watercraft (1) that can be moved by muscle power.
