An engine (2) for propelling an aircraft comprises an annular fuel cell arrangement (8) having at least one fuel cell, at least one electric motor (6) couplable to the fuel cell arrangement (8), at least one fan (4) couplable to the electric motor (6) and a cowling (10) having an inlet (12) and an outlet nozzle (14). The fuel cell arrangement (8) is arranged inside the cowling, the at least one fan (4) is arranged between the inlet (12) and the fuel cell arrangement (8) inside the cowling (10), the electric motor (6) is operable under consumption of electric power delivered by the fuel cell arrangement (8) and the at least one fan (4) is designed to produce a thrust force by creating an accelerated airflow at the outlet nozzle (14). The engine (2) is extremely efficient and comprises a distinct low noise.
