Abstract A gas-retaining surface covering for a body that can be placed in contact with a liquid, and to a corresponding arrangement and to a use. In accordance with one aspect, there is provided a use of a gas-retaining layer which is arranged on a body that is immersible in a liquid or wettable by a liquid and which is in contact by way of a liquid-facing side with a liquid when the body is immersed in/wetted by the liquid. The gas-retaining layer has on the liquid-facing side recesses and/or protruding elements whose surfaces are hydrophobic at least regionally. A gas layer is retained in the immersed/wetted region of the gas-retaining layer that separates the liquid and the immersed/wetted region of the body from one another at least regionally. The gas-retaining layer may be divided into a multiplicity of sub-regions by fluid-impermeable partitions or the protruding elements may have a central surface region which is hydrophilic and which is surrounded by a hydrophobic surface region of the protruding elements. The gas-retaining layer allows for a gas volume to be retained on the body such that the body can be separated from the liquid surrounding the body by the gas-retaining layer or by the gas retained by the gas-retaining layer.
