AbstractA semi-expendable launch vehicle (LV), i.e. an expendable LV using a reusable first stage might be a possibility to start the “virtuous circle” for future reusable launch vehicle, technologies, reuse operations and in the end also new market segments evolution. Commercial competitiveness must not be requested, but robust operation and the use of existing building blocks. This Y-Vehicle would be a small or may be a medium size launch vehicle typically used for institutional payloads. A variety of trade-offs have to be performed for system concept selection. In addition new ideas for development, AIT and operation have to be included. Little effort is yet invested in this idea, but it is part of the EADS ST ambitions for the European future launchers preparation system lead on industrial side and the necessary link with the available knowledge established within the successful Ariane programme.
