Abstract This review surveys the different formation mechanisms of low-mass X-ray binaries in globular clusters. Theoretical estimates of cross sections for tidal capture are combined with number densities of stars of different types — as derived from the initial mass function — to calculate the formation rates of a variety of close X-ray binaries. These rates are then compared with the observations. The formation of millisecond radiopulsars from low-mass X-ray binaries is also discussed. Finally the effects of core collapse and mass segregation are touched upon.
