Abstract Since plasma interchange in the F-region is field-aligned, it is not possible to describe adequately the spatial structures occurring at low latitudes when admitting that they depend exclusively on the vertical coordinate. It is therefore proposed: (1) To replace in the topside description the vertical coordinate by the length along the magnetic fieldline (in a local dipole approximation) and (2) to replace, in the transition range to the plasmasphere, Rycroft's non-analytic formula by a fully analytic function of almost equal shape.
