Background of development of tactical transport multi-purpose rear loaders, built by Hawker Siddeley for Royal Air Force; salient features of aircraft which shares some common structure with HS.748 commercial short-hauler, but is nevertheless much modified, are shown in cutaway drawing; solution to difficult problem of rear fuselage opening consists of upward-hinging ramp door forward of two outward-hinging clamshell doors which themselves are divided, each into two longitudinal sections, inner sections folding inward to reduce excrescence in airstream when in open position; illustrations show Andover in action and cutaway drawing of freighting configuration.
