Consideration of hydrodynamic problems peculiar to very deep diving oceanographic submarines that are of little or no importance in design of most advanced military submarines; they arise in connection with ballast systems, oscillations that may be excited by vortex shedding during vertical ascent or descent, effects on depth and trim angle control of compressibility of submarine hull and of sea water, precise control needed, and directional stability when under tow on surface; configuration is discussed in comparison with military submarines and bodies of revolution of elementary shape.
