During past 6 yr about 160 welded merchant ships experienced serious fractures extending into main hull girder; failures discussed occurred under normal operating conditions; analysis of failures showed that main problem was material behavior in local highly stressed areas; research further emphasized necessity of attaching importance to details in welded structures and of using less notch sensitive steel than used for riveted construction.
