Series of tests was undertaken on Connecticut Turnpike to study effect of nighttime illumination levels on driving performance; test subjects drove instrumented vehicle under nominal illumination levels of 0.22 and 0.62 ft-c, and performance under two conditions was compared; elected speeds were found to be slightly greater with greater variability under brighter luminaries; steering activity appeared to be unaffected by lighting levels; gas pedal activity increased with brighter lights; during experiment, roadway geometry had much greater effect on driver control than did illumination levels.
