Description of experimental stress analysis of wide range of rail sections and fishplated joint carried out by means of loading frame which accommodated short length of track, hydraulic jacks with load cells, and electrical resistance strain gages; most detailed test was that of B.S.110A rail which after being tested 'as rolled' was successively retested at states representing six stages of head wear, simulated by planing rail head; stress ranges determined under various loading conditions were compared with those for bullhead rail planed to represent its known safe limit of wear and gave guide to permissible head wear of rail from stress criteria.
