Abstract: The unambiguous identification of degradation processes and the damage they cause is a very important part of the diagnostics of bridge facilities and, as a result, has a fundamental impact on the efficient management of the maintenance and operation of transport infrastructure. The paper provides an overview of the degradation phenomena characteristic for reinforced concrete bridges, as well as a classification of degradation stimulators and degradation mechanisms showing their mutual conditions. The characteristics of typical degradation processes, usually combinations of two or more degradation mechanisms, are also presented. A hierarchical multi-level classification of damage to the bridge structure type concerned was proposed, as well as the relationship between the most common degradation mechanisms and class-specific damage was shown.
