This study investigates the risk factors associated with crash occurrence at arterial roads of the city of Beijing, China. By using the Generalized Estimating Equations (GEE) modeling technique with Negative Binomial link function, statistical relationships are established to relate crash risk to a variety of factors related to geometric design, traffic control and other traffic-related characteristics. Four-year crash records for 130.6-km road segments are employed to calibrate the models. Results show that, for arterial roads with heavier traffic volume, more road lanes and higher speed limits tend to have more crashes. Medians are helpful in reducing crash risk. Moreover, higher crash risks are generally associated with road segments with higher side access density.
