In recent years systems of indicators and performance reporting have been introduced to support policy management in many areas. Several indicator systems also exist for transport policy. But how can indicators be used to measure the sustainability of transport systems, and are they really used to guide transport policies in a more sustainable direction? This paper reviews a number of current indicator systems in terms of their support to more sustainable transport policies. The main aim of the research is to provide input to planning for sustainable transport in Denmark, the European Union and elsewhere. The research has received support from the Danish Transport Council, the Danish Environmental Protection Agency and the German Marshall Fund of the United States.
